Haverhill WWII veteran shares memories of a long escape Posted: 09 Nov 2012 02:18 PM PST John Katsaros's adventures in World War II seem like something straight out of a Hollywood movie. A 20-year-old Army sergeant from Haverhill, trained as a machine gunner, is assigned to a heavy bomber group at an air base in England. It is 1944. On a rainy, foggy day in March, the 10-member crew is sent on a dangerous mission: bomb an aircraft factory in Frankfurt. He now shares his story with community groups.

Iraq vet Erik Tremblay of Georgetown feels at home behind the wheel Posted: 09 Nov 2012 02:17 PM PST Erik Tremblay is at ease in the driver's seat of a tow truck, hauling broken-down 18-wheelers on the highway. It sometimes reminds him of driving fire trucks over dusty terrain in Iraq, where the former Marine served two tours of duty. "My Marine training helped me out," said Tremblay, 31, of Georgetown, who now works at Export Towing in Medford. "I knew how to maneuver large vehicles. I felt at home behind the wheel."

Vietnam vet Bob Nadeau of Lynn worked his way into a job Posted: 09 Nov 2012 02:15 PM PST Bob Nadeau's first step toward a new job was a volunteer internship at TransGroup in Chelsea. He was 62, a Vietnam-era veteran who served six years in the Navy. "It got my foot in the door," said Nadeau, now 64, a Lynn resident. Nadeau is now a logistics manager at the transportation planning company. He is often on the phone and computer, helping customers plan to ship goods across the globe.

Navy veteran Kristine Babcock of Beverly now helping others find jobs Posted: 09 Nov 2012 02:13 PM PST Kristine Babcock is on a mission to help about 300 veterans enrolled at North Shore Community College in Danvers make the change from military to civilian life. "It can be very hard to reinvent yourself," said Babcock, 47, the school's veterans coordinator. "A lot of veterans have fabulous jobs in the military, but their skills don't cross over to the civilian world."
