Everett to vote on casino proposal in special election

On Saturday, Everett will hold a voter referendum to decide if Wynn Everett, a $1.2 billion resort casino proposed by Las Vegas developer Steve Wynn, should be built on a former Monsanto chemical factory on the Mystic River. The state gaming law requires a host community agreement to address the impact of the development. Everett voters will not be voting to approve the agreement; they will be asked to vote "yes" or "no" on whether the casino should be built in Everett. If approved, Wynn's application may advance before the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. If turned down, the development cannot be built.

Google search leads to prostitution arrest in Salem

Salem police investigating the robbery of $70 from a Bridge Street coffee shop allegedly found not only the thief but a prostitution business. While investigating an unarmed robbery at the Coffee Time Bake Shop June 10, police were given the cellphone number of a woman who allegedly knew the male thief, Salem Police Lieutenant Conrad Prosniewski said. A Google search of the phone number turned up an online advertisement to hire an escort by the name of "Misha," Prosniewski said.
    

Man jailed in shooting of hunting beagles

An Enfield, Conn. man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail in the deaths of three hunting beagles that were shot and killed by his son. John Lake was not with his 13-year-old son when the boy shot the beagles in November, but the father said in court that he removed their collars and threw their bodies into a ravine after they were killed.
