Republicans oppose vote on UN disability treaty

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate plans to take up a U.N. treaty espousing equal rights for the disabled drew immediate opposition Monday from some Republicans wary of the treaty and asserting that the Senate should not be considering international treaties during a lame-duck session.

Specialty Filaments finance director sentenced

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The former finance director of Specialty Filaments Inc., a Vermont manufacturing company that went out of business in 2007, has been sentenced to four months of home confinement and placed on probation for three years for his part in federal fraud case.

State, local authorities probe fires in S. Mass

Sex offender who was freed because of state drug lab scandal is arrested on suspicion of theft

A convicted sex offender who was released from custody in September because of the scandal at the now-closed state drug lab in Jamaica Plain was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of stealing 13 watches from a department store, authorities said. MBTA Transit Police spotted Luis Quiles, 41, of Boston, and another man on a subway platform at Chinatown Station at around 10:15 a.m., huddled together in what appeared to be an attempt to conceal items from passersby, police said in a statement.

Massachusetts failed to crack the top 10 for the best high school graduation rates in the nation and also had among the lowest rates in New England, according to data released by the US Education Department today that for the first time provides a uniform calculation for graduation rates. Some 83 percent of Massachusetts 12th-graders during the 2010-11 school year graduated within four years, a rate that tied the Bay State with six other states.
