Brown praises Ryan, but keeps distance

While Republicans across the country hailed the selection of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's running mate, US Senator Scott Brown struck a much more cautious note on Monday, as Democrats tried to tie him to the Wisconsin congressman's controversial proposals to overhaul Medicare and cut social programs. Brown praised Ryan as a thoughtful and serious leader on budgetary issues, but was quick to point out that he voted twice to block consideration of Ryan's budget in the Senate.

In Washington, the race between Senator Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren is a key battle in a partisan war over who controls the Senate. But in the world of Brown's television commercials, his website, and his speeches, the senator's political party is often barely visible. His newest three advertisements feature Democratic endorsers, all of whom identify their own party prominently, without mentioning Brown's Republican allegiance at all. The Brown strategy is not complicated. Democrats hold a distinct voter registration advantage in Massachusetts.
