The Taliban has a history of targeting local officials to discourage cooperation with the West. It was supposed to have been a festive occasion: a pre-wedding party, held under the stars on a warm night. But suspected insurgent gunmen burst in on the gathering in a village field Thursday, fatally shooting nine men, including the groom, Afghan officials said. |

Security forces reportedly fired on soldiers who disobeyed orders to shoot at protesters in the city. The number of Syrians who have crossed into Turkey to escape a violent crackdown by forces loyal to President Bashar Assad swelled to nearly 2,000 on Thursday, with many more waiting to flee over the border, according to relief organizations, pro-democracy activists and news agencies. |
