The pressure on Hosni Mubarak to release his 30-year grip on Egypt escalated on a day when some of his key allies appeared at a largely peaceful anti-government rally and the Obama administration leaned on opposition leaders to join negotiations to discuss proposals to strip the president of power.

CAPE CANAVERAL —Saying that he knew his wife's mind well. astronaut Mark Kelly, husband of wounded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, announced Friday that he's resuming his training to command the final flight of space shuttle Endeavour that's scheduled to launch April 19.

CSO music director Muti to have surgery after fall

Riccardo Muti, music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is scheduled to undergo surgery for the "multiple" facial and jaw fractures that were sustained when he fainted during a Thursday rehearsal with the orchestra. The conductor is still at Northwestern Hospital, and will undergo surgery on Monday, according to a CSO statement. Muti is also undergoing tests to determine the cause of the incident. Updates will follow Monday's surgical procedure.

The agreement to have the federal government move first on the charges against Loughner, who has been charged in a three-count federal indictment of shooting Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killing two other federal employees in an attack last month outside a Tucson supermarket, was announced by Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall and Dennis Burke, the U.S. Attorney for Arizona.

Jared Lee Loughner, accused of trying to assassinate Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, will be tried first on federal charges, according to an agreement announced Friday by federal and state prosecutors.
