Staffers and volunteers at the South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights cheered Thursday morning when one of them brought in a scared but safe German shepherd mix –– the same dog they had frantically tried but failed to catch before the blizzard and assumed had perished in the storm.

Riccardo Muti, music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, collapsed on the podium early Thursday afternoon while rehearsing the opening subscription program of his winter residency at Symphony Center. The Italian conductor, 69, was reported to have been unconscious when paramedics arrived. No further details were immediately forthcoming.

Commuters trying to get to work today found that roads and mass transit service were better, but still far from normal. Metra trains were late and routes disrupted. CTA trains were delayed and jammed.

Lake Shore Drive reopened this morning, some 34 hours after it was closed down by a series of accidents that left motorists trapped in their cars for 9 hours or more. Police said the roadway reopened about 5:50 a.m.
