Cleanup at Rio's slums drives out the poorest

Customers get a haircut at the Ze do Carmo barbershop at the Santa Marta slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Tuesday. The barber used to cut the hair of the neighborhood's drug dealers and of the addicts, but now tourists come in.A program to bring services to Rio de Janiero's long abandoned slums has improved many things, but the changes also have driven up rents and increased bureaucracy, pushing many of the poorest residents further to the margins.

A 1998 paper by Wakefield, which was the first study to link a childhood vaccine to autism, was based on doctored information about the children involved, according to a new report on the widely discredited research. Some believe the latest news that researcher Andrew Wakefield faked his data linking vaccine to autism will put an end to the claim of scientific underpinnings for the anti-vaccine movement. But will it really make a difference?

Ski resorts gear programs toward kids

Vermont's Smugglers' Notch resort is among the standouts when it comes to teaching kids to ski. Its Snow Sport University accepts children as young as 2 1/2 for ski lessons, and its program includes lunch and an après-ski science show. Young skiers used to be an afterthought at many winter resorts, banished to the bunny hill or daycare centers while adults enjoyed the mountain. Not anymore.
