Vice President Joe Biden makes an unannounced visit to Afghanistan for a series of meetings with top officials, including President Hamid Karzai. The visit comes at a pivotal point in the U.S. effort to hand off security to the Afghans, says a senior White House official.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Afghanistan on Monday night for a series of meetings meant to gauge the progress toward a drawdown of U.S. forces later this year and an eventual handoff of security responsibilities to the Afghans.
